Fund Raising and Non-Profit Organizations

In the "good old days", we could sell greeting cards and candy bars to raise money for an organization. This gradually turned into a targeted form of catalog shopping in which potential donors would flip though a product catalog and select an item. The fulfilled order created a revenue source for the organization.

Then the Internet came along.

The organization forms a committee and on the top of everyone's list is - a website.

Many organizations turn to "do it yourself" website builders in the mistaken belief that visitors will find their website once the site is online. It's the World Wide Web version of the famous baseball movie, "Field of Dreams" - if you build it, they will come to the website.

After struggling though the online interface, most do it yourself websites end up being a lot of work and not satisfactory. The results just aren't there.

You've done a lot of work to create an online presence and it doesn't seem that anyone is donating or visiting your website.

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Do you really know how many visitors are coming to your website? Have you set up analytics and analyzed the website traffic? For many first time website owners, the answer is "no".

  2. Are you still using your personal e-mail account or a free e-mail account to send your fundraising e-mail?

  3. Do you know how to accept credit cards for donations on your website?

  4. Is it easy to find information on your website? Or do your visitors leave within the first minute because the navigation reminds them of the mystery lunch in a school cafeteria?

  5. Have you ever wondered how a website gets onto the first page of a search engine's results?

  6. Do you know how to use blogs and newsletters to get your message out?

  7. Is there a brand identity or logo for your organization?

  8. Do you know how to do press releases?

  9. How do you keep the website content fresh and interesting?
